What is "Energy Flow"?

author: Daniel Clary Webb, producer

"an emotion" vs. "energy flow"

I think of "emotion" as a word representing a commonly recognized state of mind. It names a category of felt-sense experience I'm having so we can talk about it.

Neuroscience and psychology have much to say about emotions from an objective point of view.

I think of "energy flow" as a sensory experience — often a complex experience — that's always occurring on a parallel channel with cognitive activity. Emotional intelligence deepens our awareness of our energy flow and gives us practice functioning on both channels at the same time.

An energy experience may not fit as neatly into a categorical word package as an emotion — at least not without a lot of practice at describing our experiences without stepping outside of them.

We commonly speak of an emotion in a rational or even academic way, as an objective outsider.

We can speak about an experience of energy flow by describing sensations and perhaps a personal felt-sense of meaning.

"Emotion" and "energy flow" are both useful phrases, but they tend to put us in different perspectives as we speak about an ongoing experience.
